43. Murder in the dark.

Today was an excellent day.

Sixth grade students from three elementary schools in our district came to our high school for a leadership program. It was only a total of 45 sixth graders or so, as only the sixth grade school captains, house captains, music captains, vice captains and leaders of varying degrees were invited.

Myself and seven others were given the chance to run the day, organise games, prepare a scavenger hunt and supervise whatever else it was that the sixth graders did. The teachers left us to it, so we realy could rule the proverbial roost. That was great in itself, but we also got to skip a day’s worth of class, which is always a bonus.

The kids were a lot of fun. The six that I had in my group all seemed to have a great sense of humour and weren’t the quiet, shy type I was expecting, which made running a discussion a breeze.

There was also a free barbeque lunch for the kids (drinks included) that we were allowed to take part in (and yes, when I mentioned this to friends they wanted to hit me).

Despite all this, the best part of the day was definitely when they left. The program didn’t take up quite the whole day, so we were expected to attend our final class. But, well, we didn’t feel like it so the eight of us skipped class to play murder in the dark for an hour in the school auditorium. It was pitch black, the stairs were terrifying to climb and the nagging fear that a teacher could walk through the door at any moment and find eight “school leaders” acting like idiots made the game all the more fantastic.

When we finally decided that we’d pushed our luck far enough and went to class, I couldn’t help but feel sentimental. I’m going to miss the perks of being a school leader next year.
